Cost coverage by insurances

  1. Quick appointments—even in the evenings and on weekends

For those with public health insurance in particular, self-pay therapy offers the advantage of short waiting times and flexible appointments—unlike psychotherapists approved by health insurance companies, where waiting times of up to 6 months are common. With me, you can usually get an appointment within a week.

  2. No documentation in the health insurance system

The therapy is not “recorded” or forwarded, which can be important for people who:

    • are planning to become civil servants,

    • take out occupational disability insurance,

    • undergo a traffic medical examination (MPU)

    • want to keep their options open for changing insurance providers

    • are seeking psychological support without a “diagnosis” being recorded

  3. More flexibility

Psychotherapists approved by health insurance companies are only allowed to use scientifically recognized methods—which makes sense in principle, but modern and innovative procedures often take years to be recognized by health insurance companies. For example, systemic therapy was scientifically recognized in 2008, but was only covered by health insurance companies in 2019.

As a self-payer, you can use such innovative methods earlier – and also benefit from more freedom: the duration, frequency, and content of sessions can be flexibly and individually adapted to your needs, without rigid requirements from health insurance companies.

Cost coverage by insurances

Services provided by alternative practitioners for psychotherapy are generally not covered by statutory health insurance.

Some private health insurance companies partially cover psychotherapy provided by alternative practitioners. Please check with your health insurance company in advance to find out whether the costs will be covered.

There are also some supplementary insurance policies that cover the costs of psychotherapy provided by alternative practitioners.

Why does it make sense to pay for therapy yourself?
